Irish Independent Weekend Magazine Article

As part of the promotion for my book 'Driving The Green', the Irish Independent asked me to write a piece on five of my favourite golf courses. It was for the Travel section of last Saturday's Weekend Magazine.

Choosing five is always tough and it seems so unfair on all the courses that don't get mentioned. If I asked you to list your top five golf courses, you'd list off five, then add another, think about it, mention another, groan because you'd left out that favourite course... and end up listing nine or ten. Don't believe me, then go ahead and try it.

So I took five of my favourites and rounded them up to 27. I haven't included every course that I wanted to, but Concra Wood, Adare and Druid's Glen get mentioned, as do Bunclody, Royal Curragh and Gowran Park. On the links side, Royal County Down, Strandhill, Tralee and Ballybunion also make appearances... but the five courses at the heart of the article are:

1. Carne Golf Links

Approach to the par five 1st on the new Kilmore nine
2. Carlow Golf Club

The rather lethal, short par three 17th
3. Cork Golf Club

Approach to the intricate, new bunkering beneath the 12th green
4. Scrabo Golf Club

Some of the best views on the island open up from the
par three 17th at Scrabo
5. The Island Golf Club

The excellent par five 15th at The Island
Or, if you just want to see a heap of pictures for these (and other) courses, take a look at my Flickr page. Or buy Driving The Green - an adventurous little tale of driving round Ireland in a camper van, with just the occasional round of golf.

  1. Some excellent courses there and I must say I enjoyed my round in Carlow GC last summer, definitely on my to-do list again. Also took a trip down to Cork Golf Club which was a great challenge.
