The Social Media Golf Open 2014... Year 2

Doonbeg's stunning seaside 6th hole
2013 was the inaugural year of this golf event and to say it was a success is an understatement. 30 something pairs came together to fight it out (four ball better ball format) for an impressive trophy that took four rounds of golf to decide. The courses played are frequently listed among Ireland's best.

The age profile hovered around the 30-40 mark which made the evenings... livelyWith accommodation arranged (it was an optional part of the package) it also meant that a good camaraderie was established early on, and isn't that the best part of golf. If you can't slag off the guys you're playing with there's little point turning up!

Last year the four courses played were Mount Juliet, Castlemartyr, Adare and Old Head. Not too sloppy, eh!

There is definitely a sense of 'if it ain't broke...' but this year there has been one enforced change.

Mount Juliet has been swapped for Doonbeg... which means the mix of courses couldn't be more diverse: a true links, an inland 'links', a seaside course and a parkland. That'll sort the men from the boys, although last year the tournament was pretty much over after two days as Kevin Connolly and Declan Devine (the 'Northern Bandits' from Tyrone) wracked up 48 and 44 points at Mount Juliet and Castlemartyr, respectively. There's no such thing as an unassailable lead in golf (ask Rory or Greg), but that's almost as unassailable as it gets. The boys will be back defending their title in 2014.

Many of the pairings from 2013 have signed up for the 2014 event, so if you want to get involved, here are the details. I suggest you get a move on.
