Irish Pairs Golf League

Approach to 18 at the Ballesteros  Course at The Heritage.
It's a bit movie-esque but...
... from the producer of the Let's Play Open comes the inaugural Pairs Golf League 2013.

In fact, the Let's Play Golf Open is part of the league, as it's all organised by Concierge Golf, a company founded and run by John Dooley, the former Club Professional at Doonbeg.

There is quite a movement at the moment to entice golfers to participate in an increasing number of Irish golfing challenges. These  showcase many of our best golf courses, which can only be a good thing. What's more, the green fee rates and/or packages are nearly always excellent value, too.

Pairs Golf League

What do you need to know about the league?
Find a willing accomplice (male/female) to make up your golfing partnership and enter the event by paying a one-off entry fee of €50. This then entitles you to enter a series of seven events. You can pick as many or as few as you want to play in:
  1. Sunday 21st April – Old Head Golf Links, €180 per Team
  2. Sunday 26th May – Castleknock Golf Club, €75 per Team
  3. Sunday 30th June – Dromoland Castle, €80 per Team
  4. Sunday 21st July – The Ballesteros Course at the Heritage, €80 per Team
  5. Sunday 24th August - The Ballesteros Course at the Heritage, €80 per Team
  6. Sunday 29th September – Castlemartyr Resort, €72 per Team
  7. Saturday 5th October - 'Let's Play Open', Doonbeg Lodge, €150 per Team
The Grand Final will be held at The Ballesteros Course at the Heritage on Sunday 27th October.
Old Head of Kinsale's 2nd hole. A par four around the cliffs' edge.
No doubt you will be eyeing up that Old Head of Kinsale slot which, including the entry fee, means that you will be paying €115 each to play one of Ireland's greatest golfing experiences. (Current green fee is €200.) And you can throw in a team goodie bag with that, too!

And then there's Doonbeg... a Greg Norman designed gem. I'm not belittling the other courses on the list but between Old Head of Kinsale and Doonbeg, you have two courses that are on the Bucket List of many, many golfers

How do I qualify for the final?
Simple: be one of the top eight teams from across the different events. But remember, just because you win one event does not mean you will automatically qualify, and here's why:

There will be points allocated at each event:
1st position – 100pts
2nd position – 75pts
3rd position – 60pts
4th position – 50pts
5th position – 45pts
6th position – 39pts
7th position – 34pts
8th position – 30pts
9th position – 27pts
10th position – 25pts
11th – 20th position – 10 pts

The format will be fourball betterball with one score to count on holes 1-8 and 10-17, and both scores to count on holes 9 and 18 for each event.

The wonderful par three 17th at Dromoland Castle. All carry.

Prizes?
But of course: at each Pairs Golf League event, prizes will be sponsored by Drive Golf Performance, and there will also be Hole-in-One Prizes to be won, such as a trip to the 2014 US Masters. Could there be a better time to get that elusive ace! The grand prize for the Pairs Golf League Champions is to be confirmed.
